Clinical Hypnotherapy
What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of mind produced either by oneself (auto or self-hypnosis) or by responding to the directions of a therapist. It is usually accompanied by deep physical relaxation, a focusing of your attention within yourself and a corresponding reduction in awareness of your surroundings. Hypnosis has been likened to daydreaming, and naturally occurring forms of hypnotic trance are common i.e. when absorbed in a good book or some other activity, or driving on auto pilot down a familiar road.
Hypnosis is not the same as sleep. It is not like an anaesthetic. You do not “pass out” and you are not subconscious when you are hypnotised. You do not lose control over your mind or your feelings. You do not weaken or surrender your will to any other person. In fact, your will-power may be strengthened with hypnosis.

What Can Hypnosis Be Used For?
Hypnosis is particularly useful for helping people change their behaviour, symptoms, and attitudes. It is one of the most powerful psychological methods for mental and physical relaxation. Thus, hypnosis is useful for anxiety and stress control, and phobias. It is also useful in dealing with attention deficits, motivation, assertiveness and confidence building, ego-strengthening and enhancing psychotherapy and counselling.
When in hypnotic trance you have much greater access to your subconscious mind and any suggestions given by yourself or a therapist act more powerfully and more surely than at any other time as they go straight into the ‘subconscious mind’ and start to exert an influence over how you feel, think and behave.

What Are The Types Of Hypnosis?
Several types of hypnosis are used, the main ones being Suggestion Therapy and Analytical Therapy:
Suggestion Therapy is used for simpler problems, such as smoking, exam and interview nerves, relaxation, confidence boosting, etc. These problems usually require just one or two sessions.
Analytical Therapy is used to discover the causes of psychological problems which are producing external symptoms, such as compulsions, stress-related eczema, sexual problems, obsessions, panic attacks, deep-seated fears, phobias, etc. Analytical Therapy usually takes between 6-8 sessions, but this can vary for different people (a maximum of 12 sessions).
Emotional problems respond particularly well to Analytical Therapy (also known as ‘hypno-analysis’). The therapy is based on the doctrine of ‘cause and effect’, where every symptom must have a cause. Hypno-analysis can reveal and remove the cause, consequently removing the symptoms. The objective of analysis is to bring you to ‘a moment of surprising and liberating enlightenment’ and to bring about lasting release from the symptoms. Many other types of treatment seek to control the symptoms but hypno-analysis seeks to remove the problem.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Because hypnotherapy is a form of learning, repetition is helpful, as it was when you learnt your multiplication tables as a child, until you “knew it off by heart”. Hypnotherapy speeds up this process. The number of sessions you need will depend on how mild or serious your problem is and how long you have had it. Generally speaking, the easier the problem and the shorter time you have had it, the fewer number of sessions that you will require. Many conditions require about 8 sessions.
